Programs and Classes

It is often said that what you do not know will not hurt you; however, our entire philosophy at The Back University©  is in complete contrast to this age old myth!

We believe knowledge is essential to putting the power and control over your health back into your hands, where it should be. Having said that, we highly recommend you start your process of permanent back pain relief by taking the confidential Back Pain Assessment .  Upon completion, you will receive a customized report sent directly to your e-mail inbox that will provide you with some initial first steps in learning about your specific back pain and how to overcome it.

After you have taken the assessment, or if you have already completed it, and determined based on your score you need to increase your back health knowledge and begin a program of recover, we recommend you consider one of programs or classes.

All of our programs are developed with one goal in mind... to help eliminate pain and prevent it from reoccurring in the future.

Research shows that the most effective way to treat back pain is through a comprehensive, preventative approach. The best approach in treating back pain is one that combines education on the anatomy of the back, information as to what causes back injuries, instruction in proper movement patterns/postures, and stretches and exercises to help prevent back pain in the future. Below is an overview outline of the steps throughout our program:

The Back University© Back Pain Treatment Program

Step 1:     We assess your understanding of back pain utilizing our Back Pain Assessment Questionnaire.

Step 2:     You determine your baseline functional limitations and pain levels using the following:

  • Numeric Pain Intensity Scale
  • Wong Baker Faces Pain Scale
  • Low Back Pain Oswestry Questionnaire

Step 3:    We educate you on the anatomy of the back and relate this to the most common causes of back pain.

Step 4:     You learn how to move and function in the position that puts the least amount of stress on your back—your neutral spine.

Step 5:     We teach you a comprehensive flexibility program targeting the muscles that can exert abnormal forces on the spine.

Step 6:     You learn a full progression of a core stability program to target the deep muscles that stabilize the lumbar spine.  In addition, you will also learn a basic exercise program that will be vital in improving your overall health.

Step 7:     You will get education on correct sitting and standing postures, as well instruction on how to retrain your body to have proper posture during your daily activities.

Step 8:     You will receive advanced training on how to incorporate proper movement patterns and postures into all your daily activities.  We will address work ergonomics and common movement patterns we all perform hundreds of times throughout the day.

Step 9:     Participate in a holistic discussion for back pain management and learn how factors such as weight, stress, diet, and exercise affect back pain.

Step 10:   Re-evaluation and maintenance management.
